iPhoning Your Way to Retirement

I want to be rich. Steve Jobs promised it. App after app, the Apple gods got angry with me. Until finally, with nothing but an accelerometer, two dozen naked women, and the nation of Japan, I had a story to tell.

Nearly 1 in 3 Laptops fail over 3 years

SquareTrade analyzed failure rates for over 30,000 new laptop computers covered by SquareTrade Laptop Warranty plans and found that one-third of all laptops will fail within 3 years. SquareTrade also found that netbooks are 20% more unreliable than other laptops, and that Asus and Toshiba are the most reliable laptop brands.

Is it OK to use OEM Windows on your own PC? Don't ask Microsoft

So, to recap: A PC hobbyist or enthusiast who wants to buy a legal copy of Windows 7 at a discount gets confusing and conflicting information from Microsoft’s web site. Microsoft’s own “decision engine” leads him to software he isn’t supposed to use, and even offers extra discounts if he buys through those links. He gets no information from online retailers who will happily take his money for a product he technically isn’t allowed to install. And he gets absolutely wrong answers if he asks at Microsoft’s official help forums.

Is that pathetic, or what?

Uhm, what a mess! (via @longo213)

Lenovo ThinkPads Arrive at International Space Station

025-01

A Russian rocket that arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) this summer delivered ThinkPads to space.

The ThinkPad T61p installed in the ISS provides faster, lighter and more energy efficient notebooks to perform a full range of tasks.

The delivery continues a long-standing relationship ThinkPad has with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), but these are the first ThinkPads created by Lenovo to be used at the space station. All earlier NASA ThinkPads came from IBM.

Eventually there will be more than 100 ThinkPads on the space station and in NASA’s Space Shuttles, which will help do everything from steering the Space Shuttle to running robotics to providing streaming video.

Also, for the first time this year, every astronaut on the ground will be utilizing a ThinkPad T500 in their daily work. This initiative lowers training costs by allowing astronauts to become proficient at utilizing the most critical piece of hardware equipment they use in space, while they are on the ground.

Check the rest of the article about absolute dominance of ThinkPads in outer space.
