Steve Jobs usage of word "freedom" is getting close to the 1984 newspeak
And here we are again, month after I pointed out that Apples own 1984 commercial is a parody of the todays company principles, Mr. Steve Jobs confirmed this stance once again.
One drunken reporter, pissed of by iPad commercial http://gawker.com/5539717/ wrote to sjobs@apple.com:
If Dylan was 20 today, how would he feel about your company?
Would he think the iPad had the faintest thing to do with “revolution?”
Revolutions are about freedom.
And Steve Jobs answered thusly:
Yep, freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom.
Is this the freedom we want? I mean the "freedom" to choose whatever Apple allows to be chosen and passes through to their devices? Yeah, I'am not forced to use their products, but nevertheless, this is frightening.
1984 by George Orwell contained a concept of newspeak - new language developed specifically to limit the thinking of people. This is the excerpt from it about word free/freedom:
“free: meaning Negative freedom (without) in a physical sense, only in statements like “This dog is free from lice”, as the concepts of “political freedom” and “intellectual freedom” do not exist in Newspeak.”
Ehm, yeah, thanks Mr. Jobs - now I can sleep properly. Free from porn, free from choice and free from real freedom.
